Cut your Grocery Bills in Half

May 28th 2008 02:01
In this current economy many people are looking for ways to save money. We are facing very tough economic times which forces us to get creative in order to provide for their loved ones. My goal in creating this blog is to help other people find ways to save money. I am a mother of two little boys, and I have to pinch pennies on a daily basis just to make ends meet. It can be a challenge to stretch every dollar but it certainly can be done. Other than rent one of our biggest expenses is food. At one point we were spending nearly $700 per month on food, and diapers alone. I noticed that inflation had caused food prices to sky rocket at an alarming rate. In the last 4 years a package of chicken breasts has nearly doubled. A jar of quality jam without high fructose corn syrup in it, was as high as $4.50 a jar. My biggest challenge was trying to figure out how I was going to buy quality food at reasonable prices. The good news is that there are ways to save on your grocery bill. Some of these methods may be right under your nose.

Simple Ways to Save on Groceries

Club card Savings

Many supermarkets offer a club card or discount card, which enables customers to take advantage of savings by using their card. Go through and only buy the items that are on sale. For instance if you need to get toilet paper buy the brand that is on sale with the card. This can also apply to almost any food item. This may take you out of your comfort zone because you will find that you buy brands that your not used when your favorite brand isn't on sale. I do the same thing with just about every item in the store. At the end of your shopping trip you will notice the savings on your receipt. At one visit I saved over $90 just by buying items discounted by the card.

Coupons

Coupons can be found in your local newspaper and on line. There are many web sites that even offer printable coupons for your favorite products. You can also write letters directly to the manufacturers and flat out ask them for coupons and even free product vouchers. When you write to them be sure to tell them what you like or dislike about their product. Most manufacturers will reward you with coupons or free product vouchers.

Plan your meals

Prior to going shopping sit down and decide what's on the menu for that particular week Prepare your grocery list around items on the menu so you don't wind up buying a lot of un necessary items.

Know your Store

If you like shopping at a particular store all the time get to know how their system works. Many stores mark down products that are ready to expire that day. You can use the item that day or freeze it.
